This summer you can enjoy an immersive cultural experience while staying at Coral Cotillo Beach
The seaside town of Cotillo, a paradise for water sports lovers, is known for its endless white sandy beaches and crystal clear water and for its dreamy sunsets, but this small seaside enclave also holds other treasures: it is one of the few coastal places where travellers can fully connect with the local people, its culture, gastronomy, its natural environment and reconnect with themselves.
The village of El Cotillo has managed to preserve its oldest traditions, while at the same time creating other more contemporary traditions in which all residents and visitors actively participate.
This summer you can enjoy an immersive cultural experience while staying at Coral Cotillo Beach which is located in the heart of the village.
1st and 2nd July: Fuerteventura en Música (FEM) returns to La Concha beach for its 16th edition
This multicultural festival, which continues with a vocation for environmental awareness, with a wide variety of musical genres and free of charge, returns to La Concha beach, in El Cotillo, during the first weekend of July with a line-up made up of ten artists, which will be announced soon.
August 17-28: El Cotillo Fiesta in honor of the Virgin of Safe Voyage
It is one of the most popular festivities in the north of Fuerteventura with a varied program for all ages. On its big day, on August 21st, the procession and boarding of the Virgin of the Safe Voyage is celebrated. The statue of the virgin is carried from the little church in the village by the fishermen through the town accompanied by canarian folk musicians to the Muellito, where the sailors await her to start the maritime procession.
These days one of the oldest traditions in the Canary Islands is celebrated, “La Calada” (pronounced La Calá). At low tide, the town's fishermen head to Playa del Río, near the Cotillo Lighthouse, where they release the “chinchorro”, a traditional fishing net. The fish they collect is taken to the muellito where they cover it with brine (concentrated salt) and let it dry in the sun for a few hours. They keep it refrigerated until the day of the traditional barbecue of “jareas”, “papas arrugadas” and “gofio” to which all the inhabitants and visitors of the town are invited. This year it will take place on August 25th.
Other celebrations to highlight are the the Meeting of Young Soloists of the Canary Islands, the Gran Sangría Bailable (Water Festival), the canarian ball competition, the fishing tournament and, as a finishing touch, the traditional night-time procession where, as tradition dictates, the Virgin of the Safe Voyage of El Cotillo and San Martín de Porres, patron saint of the neighbouring village of El Roque, meet. The festivities culminate with a great fireworks display and with shouts from the sailors who cry "VIVA LA VIRGEN DEL BUEN VIAJE" (LONG LIVE THE VIRGIN OF THE SAFE JOURNEY).
Soon Coral Hotels will publish in their blog at coral-hotels.com the complete programme of the fiestas.
